Even by Kendrick Lamar's standards, 'The Heart Part 5' is a complicated track. Built around Marvin Gaye's classic 'I Want You', it delivers three deeply personal narratives, including one that's his version of the thoughts going through the mind of his friend Nipsey Hussle on the night of his fatal shooting in 2019 (it's the first time he's spoken out properly on that topic, and it's haunting to hear his words). This is unquestionably the work of an artist in his prime. Each and every lyric has power and meaning behind it. For maximum impact, watch it with the video.
